Summary:
Senate Bill 75 (SB 75) requires members of the New Mexico State Police to be the highest-paid law enforcement officers in the state, and makes an appropriation.
Legislation Overview:
Senate Bill 75 (SB 75) amends Section 29-2-9 NMSA to require that the Secretary of Public Safety annually review the salaries of the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) and other law enforcement agencies in the state, and that they adjust, the salaries of the NMSP, if necessary, to ensure that members of the NMSP are the highest paid law enforcement officers in the state.

An appropriation of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) is made from the General Fund to the Department of Public Safety to study NMSP salaries.

Current Law:
In 2023, it was found that New Mexico State Police (NMSP) were making less than some officers in Albuquerque and Bernalillo. NMSP currently provide resources and information to other law enforcement agencies in the state. If the bill does not pass, the salary differential between NMSP and other law enforcement agencies could remain and recur.
