Legislation Overview:
House Bill 82 (HB 82) appropriates five hundred fifty thousand dollars ($550,000) from the General Fund (GF) to the Cultural Affairs Department (DCA) for expenditure in Fiscal Years (FY) 2024 through FY 2027 for the enhancement, expansion and continued implementation of the New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program.

Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY 2027 reverts to the GF.
Current Law:
The Historic Women Marker Program began in 2007 with its goal of telling women’s history in New Mexico on some of the state’s 650 Official Scenic Historic Markers. Before 2007, perhaps three markers mentioned women at all. The initial legislation made 65 markers possible.
According to the state’s Historic Preservation Division (HPD), the first phase concluded in 2010. Ten more markers were installed in 2015 with additional markers expected to bring their numbers to an even 100. The program is a partnership of the New Mexico Women’s Forum, the HPD, Cultural Properties Review Commission, New Mexico Department of Transportation, and the public. There is a process for submitting a proposed marker.
